Meditation Research

Hello and Welcome!

I am Dr Peter Malinowski founder and editor of meditation-research.org.uk. I created these pages out of a real passion: to share my understanding and insights about the science and research into meditation and mindfulness.

I find myself in the fortunate situation to live at the intersection between science (as trained researcher in psychology and cognitive neuroscience), meditation practice (with more than 30 years of own Tibetan Buddhist meditation practice) and as certified secular mindfulness trainer (in 2023, I became worldwide the very first certified Mindfulness-based Strengths Practice trainer who was appointed as MBSP Master Trainer by the VIA-Institute on Character).

Friends and colleagues ask me to explain in understandable terms what all this meditation research is about and what the most exciting findings are. In a way, this website is a result of their ongoing nagging: to share my thoughts on current developments regarding the science of meditation and explain the background.

Initially, I wanted to write a book about it, a book that explains the ever-growing scientific evidence about meditation. But before even properly starting, I realised that would be a battle I can only loose: before such book would even hit the shelves it would be outdated already! Such is the speed of new scientific evidence appearing in this area.

So, I returned to my existing meditation-research blog and realised that it holds the solution: a dynamic and growing resource that explains the science of meditation as it happens; a combination of ‘current affairs’ comments and a curated knowledge base that condenses the state of the art.

In this way, the website meditation-research.org.uk was (re-)born, offering a blog with current commentary and a more systematic knowledge base. And I am grateful that you are interested in what I have to say!

What to expect?

This redeveloped site now has three parts:

  1. The Meditation Research Blog – for running commentaries on the latest developments in meditation research, book reviews and other content we deem worth sharing. The blog, is – and will remain – free.
  2. The curated Knowledge Base – a developing resource for researchers, practitioners and everyone else interested in the science of meditation. Access to the knowledge base is for premium members, who decided that they would like to support what I am doing.
  3. The Meditation Research Newsletter that brings you updates straight to your inbox.

If you are interested in all the other stuff I'm involved in, such as the books I have written, my own meditation research, or the mindfulness-based strengths practice training I offer, check out my personal website.

I try to write as much and as regularly as possible but given all my other commitments new posts and additions to the knowledge base will appear with no particular regularity. This is why I keep the premium membership really inexpensive.

What does it cost?

The blog is accessible to anyone, no sign-up or payment required. For updates straight to your inbox you can also sign up for the occasional, free newsletter. And if you would like to go even further you can become premium member and delve deep into the knowledge base.

I aim to keep membership fees as low as possible. These fees are merely meant to generate sufficient support to cover the costs for running this site. Another reason for keeping them so low is to shield myself from too much extra pressure, so that I can share my inspiration and excitement with you; with enough headroom and not pressurised by a tight schedule.

In 2024 I revamped and relaunched the site, in a streamlined form, with a smaller footprint, reduced complexity (and functionality). If you become a premium member today, you'll get full access to the website, including the knowledge base, as well as email newsletters about new content when it's available. Your subscription makes this site possible, and allows Meditation Research to continue to exist. Thank you!
